Why Does CHA Have A Discovery Program?

Our purpose for each student is that he/she be able to relate to God with all his/her body, mind, and spirit.  Sometimes though, seemingly bright students experience high levels of frustration and difficulty performing academically.  Christian Heritage Academy addresses this challenge by incorporating the Biblical philosophy and approach of the National Institute of Learning Disabilities (NILD) in our Discovery Program.

Which Students Will Benefit From Discovery?

The Discovery Program is designed to help students who are experiencing obvious frustration in areas relating to school performance.  These students have a significant discrepancy between their estimated intelligence and actual level of achievement in the classroom.  The discrepancy is due to a disorder in the basic learning processes.

How is This Educational Therapy Effective?

The Discovery Program, developed by NILD, is designed to stimulate areas of weakness in perception and cognition.  It is not tutorial, but rather intends to change the thinking structure of a student from passive and dependent, to independence through internal motivations.

Does My Child Have a Learning Disability?

Some common characteristics of learning disabilities are:

Poor spelling

Illegible handwriting

Difficulty with oral directions

Inability to express thoughts in writing

Easily distracted and inattentive

Impulsiveness

Inconsistent grades

Uncertainty of left and right

Difficulty with abstract thinking

Poor recall or retention of information

Difficulty with reading or math

To determine if the child has a learning disability, an educational battery of tests is given to determine strengths and weaknesses. A psychological test (WISC III) is also administered by a licensed psychologist to assess student potential.
